Why This Coin Matters

This impressive Anonymous Follis was struck during the reigns of Basil II "the Bulgar Slayer" and his brother Constantine VIII (AD 976–1025), one of the strongest and most prosperous periods in Byzantine history.

Unlike most ancient coins, this issue does not portray the emperor. Instead, the obverse features a bold facing portrait of Jesus Christ Pantokrator, shown with a cross-shaped halo behind His head, holding the Book of Gospels and raising His hand in blessing. The Greek letters IC XC identify Him as Jesus Christ.

The reverse proclaims one of the most powerful messages ever struck on a circulating coin:

"Jesus Christ, King of Kings."

By placing Christ—not the emperor—at the center of the coin, the Byzantine Empire proclaimed that all earthly authority ultimately belonged to Him. These coins circulated throughout the empire in the hands of merchants, pilgrims, soldiers, and ordinary citizens more than 1,000 years ago.

At 35.5 mm, this is a large and impressive bronze coin that beautifully showcases one of the most recognizable Christian designs in medieval history.
