This impressive Anonymous Follis Class A2 belongs to the famous series of Byzantine bronze coins that replaced the portrait and name of the reigning emperor with explicitly Christian imagery.

The obverse shows Jesus Christ facing, wearing a cross-shaped halo and holding the Book of Gospels with both hands. The letters IC XC identify Him as Jesus Christ.

The reverse carries the famous inscription commonly translated:

“Jesus Christ, King of Kings.”

By removing the emperor's portrait from these bronze issues and centering Christ instead, the anonymous follis series expressed a powerful form of Byzantine Christian imperial ideology.

Class A2 folles are conventionally attributed to the joint reign of Basil II and Constantine VIII, approximately AD 976–1025. Those dates are a numismatic attribution based on the sequence of the series rather than dates explicitly written on the coins themselves.
