Why This Coin Matters

Few rulers left a greater mark on history than Justinian I. Reigning from AD 527 to 565, he sought to restore the Roman Empire to its former glory. During AD 533–537, when this coin was struck, his brilliant general Belisarius crushed the Vandal Kingdom in North Africa and began the conquest of Ostrogothic Italy, reclaiming territories that had been lost for generations.

This authentic bronze Follis was struck at the imperial mint of Antioch, one of the Byzantine Empire's oldest and most important cities. Located near the empire's eastern frontier, Antioch served as a major center of trade, military operations, and imperial administration.

Justinian's reign also transformed the empire beyond the battlefield. He commissioned the magnificent Hagia Sophia, one of the greatest churches ever built, and ordered the creation of the Code of Justinian, a collection of Roman law that still influences legal systems around the world today.

Large bronze folles like this were the everyday currency of the Byzantine Empire, passing through the hands of merchants, soldiers, and pilgrims during one of the most remarkable periods in Roman history.
