Why This Coin Matters
When Maurice Tiberius (AD 582–602) became emperor, the Byzantine Empire faced relentless threats on nearly every frontier. Persian armies pressed from the east, while Slavs and Avars raided deep into the Balkans. Through determined leadership, disciplined armies, and skilled diplomacy, Maurice stabilized the empire and secured victories that preserved Byzantine power during one of its most dangerous periods.
This authentic bronze follis was struck in Constantinople, the magnificent capital of the Byzantine Empire and one of the greatest cities of the medieval world. From this imperial capital, Maurice directed campaigns that strengthened the empire's borders and helped secure its future.
Maurice's remarkable reign ended in tragedy. In AD 602, a military revolt overthrew and executed the emperor. His death became the catalyst for one of antiquity's last great wars. The Persian king Khosrow II, claiming to avenge Maurice's murder, invaded the Byzantine Empire, beginning a devastating conflict that exhausted both empires. Only a generation later, both weakened powers would face the astonishing expansion of the early Islamic Caliphate.
This coin circulated during those extraordinary years, making it far more than currency. It is a witness to one of history's greatest turning points—a moment when the fate of the eastern Mediterranean was forever changed.
