Unlike most ancient coins, this remarkable Anonymous Follis Class G does not depict an emperor.

Instead, the obverse features Jesus Christ Pantokrator ("Ruler of All"), shown with a cross-shaped halo, raising His hand in blessing while holding the Book of Gospels. The reverse bears the Virgin Mary, emphasizing the Byzantine belief that the empire existed under the protection of Christ and His Mother rather than the authority of any single ruler.

This coin was struck during the reign of Romanus IV Diogenes (AD 1068–1071), a courageous emperor who inherited an empire under increasing pressure from the expanding Seljuk Turks. Determined to restore Byzantine strength in Asia Minor, Romanus personally led the imperial army eastward.

His reign culminated in the Battle of Manzikert in AD 1071, where he was defeated and captured by the Seljuk Sultan Alp Arslan. Although the battle itself was only one event, the political turmoil that followed opened much of Anatolia to Turkish settlement and marked one of the great turning points in Byzantine history.
