Why This Coin Matters

History often remembers Justinian the Great, but his remarkable reign might never have happened without his uncle, Justin I.

Born into a humble peasant family in the Balkans, Justin rose through the ranks of the Byzantine army to become emperor in AD 518. Largely self-educated and advanced in age when he took the throne, he recognized the extraordinary abilities of his nephew Justinian. Justin adopted him as his heir, gave him increasing responsibility in government, and ensured a smooth transition of power.

That decision helped shape the future of the Byzantine Empire. Justinian would go on to build the Hagia Sophia, compile the Corpus Juris Civilis (Code of Justinian), and launch campaigns to reclaim much of the lost Western Roman Empire.

This authentic half follis was struck at Antioch, one of the empire's oldest and most important cities. On the reverse, the large K identifies the denomination of 20 nummi, while the cross and officina mark reflect the Christian identity and careful organization of the imperial mint. These coins circulated in the markets and streets of one of the Roman world's greatest cities more than 1,500 years ago.

Though modest in size, this coin represents the beginning of one of the most influential dynasties in Byzantine history.
