In AD 526, one of the deadliest earthquakes of the ancient world devastated the city. Tens of thousands were killed, magnificent buildings collapsed, and a devastating fire swept through the ruins. Just two years later, another earthquake struck, leaving one of the Roman Empire's greatest cities in ruins.

Emperor Justinian I refused to let Antioch disappear.

He funded its reconstruction and gave it a new name: Theoupolis, meaning "The City of God." This authentic bronze follis was struck after that remarkable rebirth, and its mintmark proudly reflects the city's new identity.

The obverse shows Justinian seated on his throne, holding the symbols of imperial and Christian authority, while the reverse bears the large M denomination mark, topped by a cross and accompanied by the distinctive star used by the Antioch mint.
