Why This Coin Matters
When most people think of the Fall of Rome, they think of AD 476.
That was the year the last western emperor, Romulus Augustulus, was deposed by the Germanic leader Odoacer, bringing an end to the Western Roman Empire. Yet the Roman Empire itself did not disappear.
In Constantinople, Emperor Zeno continued to rule the Eastern Roman Empire, which modern historians call the Byzantine Empire. Roman laws remained in force, Roman institutions continued to function, and the empire endured for nearly another 1,000 years, preserving the legacy of Rome into the Middle Ages.
Zeno's own reign was filled with dramatic challenges. Shortly after becoming emperor, he was overthrown and forced into exile by the usurper Basiliscus. Refusing to surrender his throne, Zeno gathered loyal supporters, returned to Constantinople, and successfully reclaimed the empire. He spent the remainder of his reign suppressing rebellions, navigating religious divisions, and maintaining stability during one of the most uncertain periods in Roman history.
This authentic bronze coin circulated during that extraordinary era, passing through the hands of soldiers, merchants, and citizens living through one of history's defining transitions. It represents the moment when the ancient Roman world gave way to the medieval age, even as the Roman Empire itself continued to survive in the East.
More than 1,500 years later, coins of Zeno remain among the most affordable and historically significant ways to own a genuine artifact from the end of the ancient Roman world.
