Why This Coin Matters

Few Roman emperors possessed less real authority than Valentinian II.

When his father, Valentinian I, died suddenly in AD 375, the western army immediately proclaimed the four-year-old prince emperor alongside his older half-brother Gratian. The decision preserved dynastic continuity, but real power rested entirely with the adults surrounding him.

Throughout his childhood, the empire was governed by others.

His mother Justina acted as regent while navigating both political crises and bitter religious disputes. As an Arian Christian, she famously clashed with Ambrose of Milan, whose refusal to surrender church buildings became one of the defining confrontations between church and imperial authority.

Everything changed in AD 383 when the usurper Magnus Maximus overthrew and killed Gratian.

Valentinian II, still only twelve years old, retained control of Italy while Maximus ruled much of the western empire. Only the intervention of Theodosius I restored Valentinian to his throne after Maximus was defeated in AD 388.

Yet even then, the young emperor remained powerless.

Real military authority belonged to the Frankish general Arbogast, whose influence soon eclipsed that of the emperor himself. Ancient historians record that when Valentinian attempted to dismiss Arbogast from office, the general simply rejected the order and walked away—an extraordinary public demonstration of where true power rested.

In May AD 392, Valentinian was found hanged in his residence at Vienne.

Arbogast declared the death a suicide, but many ancient writers doubted the explanation, and modern historians remain divided over whether the young emperor took his own life or was murdered.

He was only twenty-one years old.

These bronze coins circulated throughout his reign, carrying the portrait of an emperor whose image projected authority while the decisions shaping the empire were made by nearly everyone except the man whose face appeared on the coin.
