Why This Collection Matters

Acts 24–26 places Paul before two successive Roman governors of Judaea: Antonius Felix and Porcius Festus. Paul was held at Caesarea under Felix, and after Festus succeeded him, Paul’s case continued until Paul appealed to Caesar.

Both governors are also represented in the numismatic record. Bronze prutot were issued in Judaea during their administrations, providing a rare overlap between named figures in the New Testament and surviving provincial coinage.

These are therefore legitimately coins issued under the governors connected with Paul’s hearings. What cannot be known is whether these particular surviving specimens ever circulated in Caesarea, were handled by Paul or the governors, or were physically present during the proceedings. Their significance comes from being authentic official coinage of the same administrations described in Acts.

The coins also reveal something about Roman Judaea itself. Instead of imperial portraiture, these small bronzes generally used inscriptions and symbols acceptable for local circulation while still expressing Roman authority through the names and regnal years of the emperors.

Together they make the political world of Acts tangible: Judaea under Roman administration, local bronze money in everyday use, and two governors whose decisions became part of the New Testament narrative.
