Why This Coin Matters

Few images are more closely associated with ancient Rome than the she-wolf nursing Romulus and Remus.

According to Roman tradition, the twin brothers were descendants of the Trojan hero Aeneas and heirs to the royal house of Alba Longa. Their great-uncle Amulius, who had seized the throne from their grandfather Numitor, saw the newborn twins as a threat to his rule and ordered them abandoned.

But Romulus and Remus survived.

The basket carrying the infants came to rest near the banks of the Tiber River, where Roman legend tells that a she-wolf discovered and nursed them. The twins were eventually found and raised by the shepherd Faustulus and his wife.

When they grew to adulthood, Romulus and Remus discovered their true identity, overthrew Amulius, and restored their grandfather Numitor to the throne.

The brothers then set out to establish a city of their own.

Their partnership ended in conflict. According to the traditional story, Romulus killed Remus during the dispute and became the sole founder and first king of Rome, traditionally dated to 753 BC.

More than a thousand years later, the Roman Empire was still telling their story on its coins.

The Urbs Roma commemorative bronze was introduced by Constantine the Great around AD 330, at the time he dedicated Constantinople as his new imperial capital. Rather than portraying a living emperor, the obverse depicts the personification of the city of Rome wearing a crested helmet, accompanied by the inscription VRBS ROMA — "City of Rome."

The reverse reaches even deeper into Rome's legendary past.

There, beneath two stars, stands the she-wolf nursing Romulus and Remus.

It was an image Romans had recognized for centuries—a visual shorthand for the origins of their civilization.

That makes the Urbs Roma bronze particularly fascinating. It was struck during the reign of the emperor who established Constantinople as a new imperial capital, yet its design deliberately celebrated the ancient city of Rome and a foundation story already more than a thousand years old.

More than sixteen centuries later, this coin remains a tangible connection to both the legendary beginning of Rome and the Constantinian transformation of the Roman Empire.
