Why This Coin Matters

The events of AD 193 exposed something Rome had always known but rarely admitted so openly — that imperial power ultimately rested on military force. When Commodus was assassinated and his successor Pertinax was murdered by the Praetorian Guard just 87 days later, the Guard then did something extraordinary and shocking: they put the throne up for auction, selling the rule of the Roman Empire to the highest bidder. Didius Julianus won. He lasted 66 days before the legions decided they had seen enough.

Septimius Severus was born in Leptis Magna in North Africa — the first emperor from the African provinces — and had risen through the imperial administration to command the powerful Pannonian legions on the Danube. When the crisis broke, he moved with extraordinary speed, marching on Rome before his rivals could consolidate their positions. He entered the city without a battle, had Didius Julianus executed, and then spent the next four years methodically eliminating the other claimants — Pescennius Niger in Syria, Clodius Albinus in Britain — through campaigns that took him from the English Channel to Mesopotamia.

His legacy was a fundamental transformation of how Rome was governed. He increased soldiers' pay, elevated the military's political role, and made clear that the army — not the Senate, not aristocratic tradition, not inherited legitimacy — was the foundation of imperial power. The silver denarius bearing his stern bearded portrait was the currency of that new reality, circulating through an empire whose center of gravity had shifted permanently toward the camps and the legions.
