Born in Leptis Magna in Roman North Africa, Severus rose through the imperial administration and military during the late second century AD. When Emperor Commodus was assassinated in AD 192, the empire descended into chaos. His successor, Pertinax, ruled for only eighty-seven days before being murdered by the Praetorian Guard, who then shocked the Roman world by auctioning the imperial throne to the highest bidder.

The buyer, Didius Julianus, never truly controlled the empire.

Across the provinces, powerful generals rejected the sale. Septimius Severus, commanding the Danubian legions, acted first. Marching rapidly on Rome, he entered the capital without significant resistance, deposed Julianus, and claimed the imperial throne.

His work had only begun.

Over the next four years, Severus defeated two rival emperors—Pescennius Niger in the East and Clodius Albinus in the West—reuniting the empire through military victory. His campaigns carried Roman armies from Britain to Mesopotamia, while his reforms permanently strengthened the role of the military within imperial government.

The dynasty he founded ruled for more than four decades and produced some of Rome's most famous emperors, including Caracalla, Geta, Elagabalus, and Severus Alexander.
