Authentic NGC-certified silver denarius of Septimius Severus, the formidable general who emerged victorious from the turmoil of AD 193 — the “Year of Five Emperors” — and established the Severan dynasty, which would rule Rome for four decades.

Born in North Africa, Severus rose through the provincial elite and commanded powerful Danubian legions. After the assassination of Pertinax and the auctioning of the throne, Severus marched on Rome and secured imperial power through decisive military action. He defeated rival claimants including Pescennius Niger in the East and Clodius Albinus in the West, consolidating control through battlefield supremacy.

The obverse of this denarius typically displays a bearded, laureate portrait of Severus facing right — stern and authoritative, reflecting his image as a disciplined soldier-emperor. Reverse types frequently depict Victory, Jupiter, Mars, or personifications of imperial virtues, reinforcing themes of legitimacy, strength, and divine favor.

Struck in silver during a period of early denarius debasement, this coin circulated widely as a standard unit of commerce. Severus notably increased soldier pay and strengthened the military’s political influence, permanently shifting the balance of power within the empire.

Encapsulated in an official NGC slab for authentication and preservation, this denarius represents the launch of a new imperial era defined by military authority and dynastic ambition.
