Few Roman emperors changed the empire as profoundly as Caracalla.

Ascending to power alongside his father, Septimius Severus, Caracalla spent much of his early career on military campaigns across the empire. After Severus' death in AD 211, he briefly ruled jointly with his younger brother Geta before ordering his assassination, securing sole control of the Roman Empire.

His reign is remembered for one decision above all others.

In AD 212, Caracalla issued the Constitutio Antoniniana, extending Roman citizenship to nearly every free inhabitant of the empire. What had once been a privilege enjoyed by a minority became a universal legal status, fundamentally redefining Roman identity and strengthening the bonds between Rome and its provinces.

Caracalla also left an enduring architectural legacy.

He commissioned the magnificent Baths of Caracalla, one of the largest and most impressive public bath complexes ever constructed in the ancient world. Covering more than twenty-five acres, the baths combined engineering, architecture, art, and public life on an extraordinary scale, and their ruins remain among Rome's most iconic landmarks today.

Throughout his reign, Caracalla embraced the image of a soldier-emperor, personally leading campaigns along Rome's frontiers and cultivating the loyalty of the army. His stern, unmistakable portrait—one of the most recognizable in Roman coinage—reflects the martial image he deliberately projected across the empire.

His reign ended suddenly in AD 217 when he was assassinated while campaigning in the East.
