What You'll Receive

  • 1. Septimius Severus silver denarius (AD 193–211). Struck by the soldier-emperor who raised army pay. His denarius held roughly 50% silver. Presented in a display album.
  • 2. Gordian III silver denarius (AD 238–244), NGC VF. A generation later, the silver kept slipping, to roughly 40% or a bit more. NGC certified and graded VF.
  • 3. Claudius II Gothicus antoninianus (AD 268–270). By the depth of the third-century crisis, the coin was mostly bronze with only a few percent silver. Presented in a display album.

Silver figures are approximate averages drawn from published studies of Roman coinage. Individual coins vary.

📷 Photos show representative examples. Each ancient coin was hand-struck and will vary in centering, strike, patina, wear, and surface characteristics.

Why This Set Matters

Roman emperors needed silver to pay soldiers. When silver ran short, they stretched it, putting less precious metal into each coin. Over the third century, that pressure, along with war, plague, and constant changes of emperor, drained the silver from Roman money until Aurelian and later Diocletian had to reform it.

This set lets you hold three steps of that story, side by side. It is not an investment product and makes no promise about value. It is history you can actually hold.
