Why This Coin Matters

When Marcian became emperor in AD 450, the Eastern Roman Empire had spent years managing the threat posed by Attila the Hun.

Earlier emperors had agreed to substantial payments to the Huns. Marcian changed course and refused to continue the regular tribute.

That decision was important, but it should not be turned into a simple story in which Marcian personally forced Attila to abandon Italy. Attila’s withdrawal from Italy in AD 452 likely reflected several pressures, including logistical strain, disease, diplomacy, western resistance, and threats to Hunnic territory. Eastern Roman military activity in the Balkans may have contributed, but the precise weight of each factor remains debated.

Marcian’s reign also saw the Council of Chalcedon in AD 451, one of the most consequential councils in the history of Christianity. The council’s decisions shaped imperial religious policy and later Christian doctrinal divisions.

Financially and militarily, the eastern empire emerged from Marcian’s reign in a comparatively strong position. This mattered because the western imperial government would continue to weaken and eventually disappear in AD 476.

It is still misleading to say Marcian’s reign 'confirmed the birth of the Byzantine Empire.' Marcian and his subjects were Romans, and the eastern Roman state evolved gradually into what modern historians call the Byzantine Empire.

This AE4 therefore belongs to a genuine turning point without requiring us to force a single beginning date onto Byzantium or a single cause onto Attila’s retreat.
