Why This Coin Matters
Few women have left a greater mark on Christian history than Helena.
Born into humble circumstances during the third century, Helena became the companion of Constantius Chlorus, one of Rome's leading generals, and gave birth to the future emperor Constantine the Great. Although political circumstances eventually separated her from Constantius, Constantine never forgot his mother. After becoming emperor, he honored Helena with the title of Augusta, elevating her to one of the most respected women in the Roman Empire.
By AD 324, Constantine had reunited the Roman Empire under a single ruler and transformed the place of Christianity within the empire. Around AD 326, Helena traveled to the Holy Land on an imperial pilgrimage to identify and preserve the places associated with the life of Jesus Christ.
According to long-standing Christian tradition, Helena directed excavations in Jerusalem that uncovered the site of Christ's crucifixion and burial. Beneath a Roman temple built during an earlier pagan period, workers reportedly discovered three crosses. Through a miraculous sign, one was identified as the True Cross upon which Jesus had been crucified. Whether viewed as history, sacred tradition, or a combination of both, Helena's pilgrimage forever changed Jerusalem's place in the Christian world.
Following her journey, Constantine ordered the construction of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which remains one of Christianity's holiest places of worship nearly seventeen centuries later.
This authentic bronze AE3 was struck during Helena's lifetime as Christianity was emerging from centuries of persecution to become the dominant faith of the Roman Empire. Coins like this circulated through the hands of soldiers, merchants, pilgrims, and ordinary citizens during one of history's most profound religious transformations.
Helena's portrait represents far more than the mother of an emperor. She became one of Christianity's most revered women, remembered for her faith, generosity, and lasting influence on the preservation of the religion's most sacred sites.
More than 1,690 years later, this coin remains a tangible connection to one of the most influential women of the ancient world.
