Born into humble circumstances during the third century, Helena became the companion of Constantius Chlorus, one of Rome's leading generals, and gave birth to the future emperor Constantine the Great. Through a miraculous sign, one was identified as the True Cross upon which Jesus had been crucified. Following her journey, Constantine ordered the construction of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which remains one of Christianity's holiest places of worship nearly seventeen centuries later.
