Why This Coin Matters
Few women have left a greater mark on history than Helena.
Born into humble circumstances during the third century, Helena became the companion of Constantius Chlorus, one of Rome's leading generals, and gave birth to the future Emperor Constantine the Great. Although she was eventually separated from Constantius for political reasons, her son never forgot her. After becoming emperor, Constantine honored Helena with the title of Augusta, elevating her to one of the most respected women in the Roman Empire.
By AD 324, Constantine had reunited the Roman Empire under a single ruler and ushered in a new era for Christianity. Two years later, he sent Helena on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land to identify and preserve the places associated with the life of Jesus Christ.
According to ancient Christian tradition, Helena oversaw excavations in Jerusalem that uncovered the site of Christ's crucifixion and burial. Beneath a Roman temple built during an earlier pagan period, workers reportedly discovered three crosses. Through a miraculous sign, one was identified as the True Cross upon which Jesus had been crucified. Whether viewed as history, tradition, or a combination of both, Helena's pilgrimage transformed Jerusalem into the spiritual center of the Christian world.
Constantine subsequently ordered the construction of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on the site—today regarded by many Christians as the location of Jesus' crucifixion, burial, and resurrection. Nearly seventeen centuries later, it remains one of Christianity's most sacred places of worship.
This authentic NGC-certified bronze AE3 was struck during Helena's lifetime.
Although made of bronze rather than silver or gold, these coins circulated throughout the Roman Empire during one of its most important turning points. They passed through the hands of soldiers, merchants, pilgrims, and ordinary citizens as Christianity emerged from persecution to become the empire's favored religion.
The portrait of Helena represents more than an imperial mother. She became one of the most revered women in Christian history, remembered for her devotion, charity, and lasting influence on the preservation of Christianity's holiest sites.
More than just an ancient bronze coin, this is a tangible connection to the woman whose legacy helped shape Christian history for nearly 1,700 years.
