Why This Coin Matters

Valentinian II was proclaimed emperor in AD 375 at roughly four years old after the death of his father, Valentinian I. His older half-brother Gratian already ruled, and the young emperor's position depended heavily on the adults and military leaders around him.

His mother Justina played an important political role during his minority. After the usurper Magnus Maximus defeated Gratian, Valentinian II retained control of Italy for a time before Maximus invaded. Theodosius I defeated Maximus in AD 388 and restored Valentinian II.

As Valentinian grew older, the powerful general Arbogast dominated the western military establishment. Ancient accounts describe serious conflict between emperor and general, although the exact balance of power is difficult to reconstruct.

In AD 392, Valentinian II was found dead at Vienne in Gaul. Ancient and modern interpretations have differed over whether his death was suicide or murder, and the evidence does not permit certainty.

It is too absolute to say Valentinian II 'never truly ruled.' A more accurate description is that his ability to exercise independent authority was severely constrained for much of his reign.

His larger bronze coinage nevertheless carried the official portrait and messages of Roman imperial authority throughout the late fourth-century empire.
