Why This Coin Matters

Plautilla was the daughter of the powerful Praetorian Prefect Gaius Fulvius Plautianus. In AD 202, she married Caracalla, the son and heir of Septimius Severus.

The marriage was politically important but personally disastrous. Ancient sources describe deep hostility between Caracalla and Plautilla.

In AD 205, Plautianus was accused of plotting against the imperial family and executed. Plautilla lost her position and was exiled.

After Caracalla became sole emperor following the death of Geta, Plautilla was executed in AD 212.

Her memory was condemned through damnatio memoriae, leading to the removal or destruction of many public images and inscriptions connected to her.

This authentic silver denarius was struck during the brief years when Plautilla held the title of Augusta. Her coinage survives as an important record of a woman the Roman state later tried to erase from public memory.
