Why This Coin Matters

The Spanish 8 reales — the Piece of Eight — was the world's first global reserve currency. Struck in colonial American mints from Bolivian and Mexican silver, it was accepted from the markets of Amsterdam to the ports of Canton, from London counting houses to Ottoman bazaars. No other coin in history circulated so widely or was trusted so universally. It was the dollar of its age — and this fragment is a piece of one.

The Vliegenthart — "Flying Heart" in Dutch — was a vessel of the VOC, the Dutch East India Company, history's first multinational corporation and the most powerful trading enterprise the world had yet seen. She departed on her maiden voyage in early 1735, loaded for the East Indies with silver to purchase spices and textiles. Days after departure, a storm drove her onto the sandbanks off the Dutch coast. She sank with her cargo — including Spanish silver that had crossed an ocean from colonial America only to sink in European waters before it could cross another.

This fragment was recovered from that wreck. The obverse carries the Spanish arms and partially legible titles of Philip V. The reverse bears the Pillars of Hercules with the banner reading PLUS ULTRA — "Further Beyond" — the motto of Spanish imperial ambition, struck in .931 fine silver at a colonial American mint. Authenticated and encapsulated by NGC with shipwreck effect designation, this is a piece of genuine ocean history.
