Why This Collection Matters
Late Antiquity saw several powerful nomadic and post-nomadic groups described in ancient sources—and later scholarship—with names related to Huns or Hūṇas.
The most famous were the European Huns associated with Attila, whose fifth-century confederation dominated large parts of Central and Eastern Europe and challenged the Roman Empire.
Farther east, other groups conventionally described as Hunnic established kingdoms across Bactria, Afghanistan, Gandhara, and northern India. These included the Kidarites and the Alchon Huns, whose rulers adapted Sasanian, Kushan, and Indian coinage traditions to create distinctive currencies of their own.
The exact ethnic and political relationships among the European Huns, Kidarites, Alchons, Chionites, Hephthalites, and other groups remain debated. It would therefore be misleading to describe the Kidarites and Alchons simply as descendants of Attila's empire who moved east after his death.
What is clear is that these Hunnic-identified groups belonged to the same broad age of Eurasian upheaval and helped reshape the political map from the Persian world to northern India.
The Kidarites established power on both sides of the Hindu Kush and inherited important elements of Kushano-Sasanian monetary culture. The Alchon Huns later became a major force in Afghanistan and northwestern India.
One of the best-known Alchon rulers was Toramana, who ruled around the turn of the sixth century and extended Alchon power deep into northern and central India. His inscriptions and coinage document an imperial authority very different from the popular image of anonymous mounted raiders.
This three-coin collection tells that broader and more accurate story: not a single migration from Attila to India, but several interconnected and still-debated Hunnic worlds whose coinage survived when much of their written history did not.
