Few cities have influenced world history as profoundly as the city now called Istanbul.

Founded as the Greek colony of Byzantion, traditionally dated to the seventh century BC, the city occupied an exceptionally valuable position on the Bosphorus. It controlled a major route between the Mediterranean and Black Seas while linking Europe and Asia.

In AD 330, Constantine the Great formally dedicated the enlarged city as Constantinople, making it an imperial capital. It became the principal capital of the Eastern Roman Empire and remained the center of the state historians conventionally call the Byzantine Empire for most of the next thousand years.

In 1453, Sultan Mehmed II conquered Constantinople and made the city the capital of the Ottoman Empire. Constantinople remained widely used as a name for the city for centuries, while forms of Istanbul were also in use; Istanbul became the official international form of the city's name in the modern Turkish Republic.
