Few women occupied a more prominent dynastic position in the Antonine age than Faustina the Younger.

Born the daughter of Emperor Antoninus Pius, she married his adopted heir, Marcus Aurelius, linking two of Rome's best-known rulers through both family and marriage.

Faustina accompanied Marcus Aurelius during periods of military campaigning. She received the title Mater Castrorum - "Mother of the Camp" - an unusual honor emphasizing her connection with the imperial army and court.

Roman coinage celebrated her with portraits alongside reverses depicting deities and personifications such as Venus, Juno, Ceres, Fecunditas, and Concordia, emphasizing ideals of prosperity, harmony, fertility, and imperial stability.

When Faustina died in AD 175, Marcus Aurelius had her deified, and commemorative coinage continued to honor her after death.

Her legacy continued through her son, Commodus, whose accession carried the Antonine bloodline into the next generation.
