Why This Coin Matters

In the final years of his reign, Constantine the Great distributed imperial responsibilities among several members of his family.

Alongside his sons, Constantine elevated his nephew Dalmatius to the rank of Caesar in AD 335. Dalmatius was assigned authority in parts of the Balkans, including Thrace, Macedonia, and Achaea, helping extend the Constantinian family's control across the empire.

The arrangement lasted barely two years.

When Constantine died in AD 337, a violent purge eliminated several male members of the wider Constantinian family who might have become rivals to Constantine's sons. Dalmatius was among those killed that same year.

The exact circumstances and responsibility for the killings remain disputed. Ancient sources connect the massacre with the succession of Constantine II, Constantius II, and Constans, but they do not allow historians to reconstruct with certainty who ordered every death or how the purge unfolded.

Among the younger relatives who survived were Gallus and his half-brother Julian, both of whom would later play major roles in the dynasty. Julian ultimately became emperor in AD 361.

Dalmatius served as Caesar only from AD 335 to 337, making his imperial coinage a comparatively brief issue of the Constantinian period. These bronzes preserve the portrait of a Caesar whose career was cut short during the struggle that followed Constantine's death.
