Foreign invasions battered the frontiers, rival generals proclaimed themselves emperor, devastating plagues swept across the empire, and the economy faltered. Historians know this turbulent era as the Crisis of the Third Century, a time when Rome's future was anything but secure.

Gallienus (AD 253–268) inherited an empire under siege. Civil wars divided Roman territory while Gothic invasions threatened the Balkans and the breakaway Gallic and Palmyrene Empires challenged imperial authority. Despite overwhelming odds, Gallienus reformed the Roman army and laid the foundations for the empire's eventual recovery.

Claudius II Gothicus (AD 268–270) restored Roman confidence through decisive military victories, most famously defeating a massive Gothic invasion at the Battle of Naissus. His success earned him the title "Gothicus," and many historians credit him with halting one of the greatest threats Rome had faced in generations.

Probus (AD 276–282) completed much of the work his predecessors had begun. He drove invading tribes beyond the frontiers, restored security across much of the empire, and strengthened Roman defenses while encouraging the rebuilding of lands devastated by decades of warfare.

Together, these three rulers transformed an empire on the edge of destruction into one capable of surviving another two centuries in the West—and nearly a thousand more in the East.
