Why This Coin Matters

Most Roman emperors were shown in profile looking straight ahead. On this distinctive late Constantinian portrait, however, the emperor’s head and gaze are turned upward.

The portrait has long attracted attention because Eusebius of Caesarea, Constantine’s contemporary biographer, described images of the emperor with his eyes raised toward heaven. In the context of Constantine’s increasingly Christian court, the pose can naturally be read as religiously meaningful.
