Why This Coin Matters

The London Mint had an important role in the western Roman Empire during the rise of Constantine's dynasty. Constantine the Great had been proclaimed emperor by his father's troops at Eboracum in AD 306, tying the Constantinian story closely to Roman Britain.

Constantine II was made Caesar in AD 317. London-mint coinage in his name belongs to this earlier Caesar period, before he became Augustus after his father's death in AD 337.

After Constantine the Great died, Constantine II inherited western territories including Britain, Gaul, and Hispania. His later reign as Augustus was brief: in AD 340 he invaded the territory of his younger brother Constans and was killed near Aquileia.

This coin should therefore be understood as a Caesar-period London issue, not as a coin struck during Constantine II's later AD 337–340 reign as Augustus.
