Why This Coin Matters

Constantine I ruled from AD 306 to 337 and transformed the political and religious landscape of the Roman Empire.

His victory over rivals eventually reunited imperial authority under one ruler. In AD 313, Constantine and Licinius agreed on a policy of religious toleration and restitution traditionally associated with the Edict of Milan. That settlement created a much more favorable legal environment for Christians, but it is more accurate than saying Constantine alone simply “legalized Christianity” in a single act.

Constantine also refounded Byzantium as Constantinople, dedicating the enlarged city in AD 330 as a major imperial capital.

After Constantine died in AD 337, posthumous coinage was issued in his name under the new Constantinian regime. These memorial issues honored the deceased emperor while also reinforcing dynastic continuity and the legitimacy of his successors.
