Why This Coin Matters
When Constantine the Great died in AD 337, his empire was divided among his three surviving sons.
The youngest, Constans, inherited Italy, North Africa, and the Balkans. At first, he appeared destined to play only a secondary role while his older brothers ruled the wealthier eastern provinces and the frontier regions of Gaul and Britain.
History had other plans.
In AD 340, his eldest brother, Constantine II, invaded Italy hoping to seize Constans's territory. Instead, Constantine II was ambushed near Aquileia and killed. Overnight, the young Constans inherited Britain, Gaul, and Hispania, becoming ruler of the entire Western Roman Empire while still in his teens.
For the next thirteen years he governed the western half of Rome.
He campaigned along the Rhine and Danube frontiers and became one of the few Roman emperors known to have personally visited Britain, crossing the English Channel to address threats beyond Hadrian's Wall.
Constans also played an important role in early Christian history. While his brother Constantius II favored Arian Christianity, Constans strongly supported the Nicene faith established at the Council of Nicaea. Their religious differences helped shape some of the most important theological debates of the fourth century.
His reign ended suddenly in AD 350.
While Constans was away from court, the general Magnentius was proclaimed emperor by his troops. Abandoned by much of his army, Constans fled across Gaul during the winter but was captured near the Pyrenees and killed before he could escape.
This authentic bronze coin circulated during those dramatic years, bearing the portrait of the youngest son of Constantine who unexpectedly became master of the Western Roman Empire.
More than an ancient coin, this is a tangible connection to one of the most important dynastic struggles in Roman history.
