Unlike most ancient coins, this remarkable Anonymous Follis Class G does not depict an emperor.

Instead, the obverse features Jesus Christ Pantokrator ("Ruler of All"), shown with a cross-shaped halo, raising His hand in blessing while holding the Book of Gospels. The familiar Greek letters IC XC identify Him as Jesus Christ.

The reverse portrays the Virgin Mary, reflecting the deep Christian faith that shaped the Byzantine Empire. Together, these sacred images proclaimed a powerful message: the empire existed under the protection and authority of Christ rather than the glory of any earthly ruler.

This coin was struck during the reign of Romanus IV Diogenes (AD 1068–1071), a determined emperor who fought to defend Byzantium against the expanding Seljuk Turks. Only a short time after coins like this entered circulation, the Byzantine army suffered defeat at the Battle of Manzikert in AD 1071. The political upheaval that followed transformed the empire and opened much of Anatolia to Turkish settlement, making Manzikert one of the defining turning points of medieval history.
