Few Roman emperors left a greater mark on both Roman and Christian history than Trajan Decius.

A respected military commander from the Balkans, Decius was proclaimed emperor by his troops in AD 249 after a revolt along the Danube frontier. He defeated Emperor Philip I "the Arab" in battle and assumed control of an empire facing mounting invasions, political instability, and economic decline.

Determined to restore Rome's former greatness, Decius deliberately associated himself with the memory of Emperor Trajan, adopting the name "Trajan" to evoke one of Rome's greatest rulers. He believed that reviving traditional Roman religion and civic duty was essential to restoring the empire's strength.

In AD 250, he issued one of the most significant religious decrees in Roman history.

Every inhabitant of the empire was ordered to perform a public sacrifice to the traditional Roman gods and receive an official certificate confirming compliance. Christians who refused faced imprisonment, confiscation of property, torture, or execution. While earlier persecutions had been regional or temporary, Decius' edict became the first attempt to enforce religious conformity across the entire Roman Empire.

At the same time, a new threat emerged along the Danube.

The Gothic king Cniva led a massive invasion into Roman territory, forcing Decius to lead the imperial army into battle. In AD 251, at the Battle of Abritus, the Romans were drawn into marshland where the Gothic forces overwhelmed them. Decius and his son, Herennius Etruscus, were both killed during the fighting.

It marked the first time in Roman history that a reigning emperor died in battle against a foreign enemy—a shocking event that demonstrated just how vulnerable the empire had become during the Crisis of the Third Century.
