Why This Coin Matters

Trebonianus Gallus became emperor in one of the darkest moments of the third-century Roman Empire.

In AD 251, Emperor Decius and his son Herennius Etruscus were killed fighting the Goths at the Battle of Abrittus.

Gallus, who was serving as a senior Roman commander in the region, was proclaimed emperor after the defeat.

He then negotiated a peace agreement with the Goths.

Ancient and later sources often portrayed the settlement as humiliating because the Goths were allowed to withdraw with captives and booty, while the Romans apparently agreed to payments intended to maintain peace.

But Gallus inherited an extremely difficult situation.

The Roman army had just suffered a catastrophic defeat.

The empire was dealing with repeated frontier invasions.

A devastating epidemic — often called the Plague of Cyprian — was spreading through Roman territory.

At the same time, rival commanders continued to compete for the imperial throne.

In AD 253, the commander Aemilian defeated Gothic forces and was proclaimed emperor by his troops.

Gallus marched to confront him but was killed by his own soldiers before the armies could fight a decisive battle.

His reign lasted only about two years.

Coins of Trebonianus Gallus therefore belong to one of the most unstable periods in Roman history — a time when emperors rose and fell with extraordinary speed.
