This bronze coin, classed as an AE follis, belongs to the famous anonymous Byzantine folles — coinage issued without the portrait of an emperor and instead featuring Jesus Christ facing directly forward.

Unlike earlier Roman coins, which traditionally showed emperors in profile, these coins placed Christ at the center of imperial imagery. The reverse originally carried the Greek inscription:

“Jesus Christ, King of Kings”

These remarkable coins were struck by successive Byzantine emperors from the late 10th century through the era of the First Crusade.
