Bronze follis of Heraclius, struck during one of the most dramatic and transformative reigns in Roman–Byzantine history. Ruling from AD 610 to 641, Heraclius inherited an empire on the brink of collapse and reshaped it in ways that marked the transition from classical Rome to medieval Byzantium.

The obverse of this dynastic type typically depicts Heraclius standing alongside his sons, Constantine III and Heraclonas, all in imperial regalia. The evolving portrait style — from shorter to longer beards — reflects changing artistic conventions and perhaps the growing gravity of the times. The reverse features the large “M” (40 nummi), with a cross above and regnal year below, affirming both denomination and Christian imperial authority.

Heraclius achieved a stunning victory over the Sasanian Persians, reclaiming Jerusalem and restoring the True Cross. Yet almost immediately, new forces emerged from Arabia. The rapid Islamic conquests permanently removed Syria, Palestine, and Egypt from imperial control.

In response to existential threats, Heraclius reorganized the state and military, laying foundations for the medieval Byzantine system. This follis captures that pivotal moment of survival and transformation.
