Small transitional bronze AE4 of Anastasius I, widely regarded as the first truly Byzantine ruler and the architect of one of the most important monetary reforms in late antiquity. Reigning from AD 491 to 518, Anastasius inherited an eastern empire that had survived the fall of the Western Roman Empire but still operated under a confusing and inconsistent late Roman bronze currency system.

This AE4 bronze reflects the early phase of his transformative reforms. The obverse typically shows a diademed imperial bust facing right with a Latin legend — visually bridging Roman imperial tradition and emerging Byzantine identity. The reverse features a denomination mark within a wreath, part of Anastasius’ groundbreaking system that standardized bronze coin values. Most notably, he introduced clearly marked denominations, including the large “M” (40 nummi) follis, creating clarity in everyday commerce.

These fiscal and monetary reforms stabilized the economy and laid the foundation for centuries of Byzantine financial strength. Struck at Constantinople and other eastern mints, coins of Anastasius mark the definitive transition from Roman to Byzantine numismatics.

Encapsulated and NGC graded for authentication and preservation, this bronze represents a pivotal turning point in imperial monetary history.
