The Sultanate of Rum Silver Dirham (1219–1283 AD) is a compelling artifact from one of the most dramatic turning points in Anatolian history. Struck under the Seljuk rulers of the Sultanate of Rum, this silver dirham reflects the transformation of former Byzantine territory into a powerful Islamic state. Following the Byzantine defeat at the Battle of Manzikert in 1071, much of Anatolia gradually passed into Turkish control, reshaping the political, cultural, and religious landscape of the region.

The name “Rum” itself comes from “Rome,” as the Seljuks identified their realm as the lands once governed by the Roman (Byzantine) Empire. From their capital at Konya and other key Anatolian centers, the sultans established a flourishing court that blended Persian administrative traditions, Turkic military leadership, and the inherited urban framework of Byzantine cities.

The obverse of these dirhams typically features refined Arabic calligraphy proclaiming the Shahada (Islamic declaration of faith), along with mint and date inscriptions in Hijri years. The reverse bears the sultan’s titles and religious formulas, emphasizing divine sanction and sovereign authority. The absence of figural imagery reflects Islamic artistic tradition, with intricate script replacing portraiture.

As a silver dirham, this coin circulated widely along Anatolia’s trade routes, connecting the Mediterranean to Persia and beyond. It stands as a tangible reminder of the era when Anatolia transitioned from Byzantine stronghold to Islamic sultanate — a shift that would influence the Crusades and shape the medieval eastern Mediterranean for centuries.
