Why This Coin Matters
Few Roman emperors honored a loved one as completely as Antoninus Pius honored Faustina the Elder.
When Faustina died in AD 140, only two years after Antoninus became emperor, the loss profoundly affected him. The Senate proclaimed her divine, but Antoninus went much further than tradition required.
He commissioned a magnificent temple to Diva Faustina in the Roman Forum, established the Puellae Faustinianae, a charitable foundation supporting orphaned girls throughout the empire, and issued an extensive series of silver and bronze coins bearing her deified portrait.
These coins proclaimed her new status with the inscription DIVA FAVSTINA—"Divine Faustina"—ensuring her memory circulated throughout the Roman world long after her death.
Antoninus himself never remarried.
Following his own death, the temple was rededicated to both husband and wife. Its towering Corinthian columns still stand in the Roman Forum today, making it one of the best-preserved monuments from the Antonine dynasty.
The reverse designs found on these denarii frequently depict goddesses such as Ceres, Vesta, Juno, Aeternitas, and Pietas, emphasizing the virtues Rome associated with its beloved empress and her eternal place among the gods.
This authentic silver denarius circulated during one of the most peaceful and prosperous periods in Roman history, preserving the memory of an empress whose influence endured long after her lifetime.
More than an ancient coin, it is a tangible connection to one of history's most enduring expressions of imperial love and remembrance.
