Why This Coin Matters

Saloninus was the son of Gallienus and grandson of the captured emperor Valerian I — a teenager carrying the weight of an imperial dynasty on his shoulders during Rome's most dangerous century. He was sent to govern the Gallic provinces from Cologne, placed under the supervision of senior officers who were supposed to manage the western frontier while Gallienus dealt with crises elsewhere. It was the standard arrangement for young Caesars in the Crisis era.

The arrangement collapsed violently in AD 260. Postumus — the commander of Rhine frontier forces — revolted, and a dispute over the distribution of plunder between Postumus's troops and those loyal to Saloninus quickly escalated into open conflict. Loyalist forces proclaimed Saloninus as Augustus, elevating him to full emperor in a desperate attempt to legitimize resistance to Postumus. It made no difference. Postumus besieged Cologne, captured the city, and had Saloninus executed.

That execution was the founding act of the Gallic Empire. With the Valerian dynasty's representative in the west dead and Gallienus unable to respond effectively — his father was simultaneously being captured by the Persians at Edessa — Postumus consolidated control over Gaul, Britain, Spain, and parts of Germania as a separate Roman state. The fourteen-year Gallic secession traces its origin directly to the moment Saloninus died in Cologne. This silver antoninianus was struck during the brief years of his Caesar-ship — the coins of a prince whose death changed the map of the Roman world. Certified by NGC.
