This authentic billon Antoninianus of Probus comes from one of the most volatile periods in Roman history—the Crisis of the 3rd Century. Struck between AD 276–282, it represents the reign of a soldier-emperor who brought rare stability to an empire defined by constant upheaval, invasion, and rapid leadership change.
The coin features Probus wearing the radiate crown, accompanied by imperial titles that emphasize his authority during a time of crisis. The reverse often depicts dynamic military imagery, including the emperor on horseback or symbols of victory, reinforcing his role as a commander who restored strength to Rome’s frontiers.
Struck in billon, a heavily debased silver alloy with traces of silver wash, these coins reflect the economic challenges of the era while still maintaining the visual tradition of earlier silver currency. They circulated widely across an empire struggling to recover from decades of instability.
Probus proved to be one of the most capable rulers of this period. He successfully campaigned against Germanic tribes including the Vandals, Franks, and Burgundians, securing Rome’s borders and restoring order. Beyond military success, he is also known for economic initiatives, including directing soldiers to cultivate vineyards across the provinces—helping to rebuild local economies. Despite his achievements, his reign ended in typical fashion for the era, with his assassination by his own troops in AD 282.
This is more than just a coin—it’s survival against the odds. A tangible connection to one of the few emperors who brought stability during Rome’s darkest century.
