Why This Coin Matters

For more than four centuries, the Roman Empire had been one state.

Theodosius I was the last man to rule all of it.

Born in Hispania (modern Spain), Theodosius came from the same provincial tradition that had earlier produced Trajan and Hadrian. After the catastrophic Roman defeat at the Battle of Adrianople in AD 378, where Emperor Valens was killed by the Goths, the eastern empire stood on the verge of collapse. The western emperor Gratian turned to Theodosius, appointing him emperor of the East to rebuild Rome's shattered military.

He succeeded.

Theodosius restored stability by rebuilding the army, negotiating peace with Gothic federates, and defending the empire during one of its most vulnerable periods. His military and diplomatic achievements preserved the eastern empire at a moment when its survival was far from certain.

His religious policies proved even more influential.

In AD 380, the Edict of Thessalonica declared Nicene Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire. Over the following years, pagan sacrifices were prohibited, many temples were closed, and imperial support shifted decisively toward Christianity. The religious transformation begun under Constantine reached its completion during Theodosius's reign.

His final achievement came through civil war.

After defeating the western usurpers Magnus Maximus and later Eugenius, Theodosius reunited the eastern and western empires under a single ruler. For the final months of his life, he governed the entire Roman world—from Britain to Mesopotamia—as no emperor would ever do again.

When he died in AD 395, the empire passed to his two sons: Arcadius in the East and Honorius in the West.

The division proved permanent.

The Eastern Roman Empire endured for another thousand years as Byzantium. The Western Roman Empire collapsed less than a century later.
