Why This Coin Matters
When Postumus was murdered by his own troops in AD 269, the Gallic Empire he had built over nine years was immediately tested. Two short-lived claimants — Laelianus and Marius — came and went within months, each killed almost as soon as they were proclaimed. It was Victorinus who stabilized the situation and picked up where Postumus had left off.
He inherited a western Roman state that was genuinely functioning — its own Senate, consuls, Praetorian Guard, and coinage maintaining the full apparatus of Roman governance while operating entirely independently of the central emperor in Rome. The central emperor in question was now Claudius II Gothicus, who had won fame fighting Gothic invaders and was actively working to reunite the fractured empire. When Claudius turned his attention westward, Victorinus successfully defended the Gallic Empire's territories against Roman attempts at reconquest — proving himself a capable military commander in the tradition of Postumus.
His reign lasted approximately two years. Ancient sources report that he was assassinated in AD 271 by one of his officers — the motive given was personal rather than political, a private grievance that ended a reign showing genuine promise. The Gallic Empire survived him under the regency of his mother Victoria — the remarkable "Mother of the Camps" who would play kingmaker one more time before the western state was finally reabsorbed by Aurelian in AD 274. This bronze circulated through those two years of Victorinus's reign — currency from the western Roman Empire most people have never heard of. Certified by NGC.
