Why This Coin Matters

Constantine I spent considerable effort constructing a dynastic succession that would prevent the civil wars that had consumed the Third Century. By AD 335, he had elevated multiple family members to imperial rank — his sons Constantius II, Constantine II, and Constans as Caesars, and now his nephew Dalmatius as a fourth Caesar, entrusted with governing the critical provinces of Greece, Thrace, and the lower Danube frontier. The arrangement appeared to distribute imperial responsibility across a capable family network, ensuring broad coverage of the empire's most vulnerable sectors.

Constantine died in May AD 337. The carefully constructed succession collapsed almost immediately. Within months, the army — reportedly acting on behalf of Constantine's sons — carried out a systematic purge of male relatives who might complicate the division of the empire between the three brothers. Dalmatius was among those killed, along with several uncles, cousins, and other family members. The ancient sources are deliberately vague about exactly who ordered the massacres, but Constantius II — who was present at Constantinople while his brothers were not — bears the most historical suspicion.

Only two young relatives survived the purge: Gallus and his younger brother Julian — the future emperor — apparently spared because of their age and the intervention of the empress mother. Julian would spend the rest of his childhood haunted by the memory of what Constantine's sons had done to his family. His eventual rejection of Christianity and attempt to restore traditional Roman religion was shaped in no small part by the Christian emperors who had murdered his father and relatives. This bronze was struck during the two years Dalmatius held his Caesar title — a historically poignant piece from a man history barely remembers. Certified by NGC.
