This authentic billon Antoninianus of Probus comes from the recovery phase of the Roman Empire following the Crisis of the 3rd Century. Struck between AD 276–282, it represents the reign of a soldier-emperor who not only restored stability to Rome’s frontiers, but also reshaped the economic landscape of the western provinces.

The coin features Probus wearing the radiate crown, symbolizing imperial authority and the Antoninianus denomination. The reverse types often depict figures such as Providentia, Sol, or Victory—reflecting themes of foresight, renewal, and the restoration of Roman strength after decades of instability.

Struck in billon, a debased silver alloy with traces of silver wash, these coins circulated widely during a period of rebuilding. They were used across an empire that was stabilizing both militarily and economically under Probus’ leadership.

Beyond his military successes, Probus is remembered for a unique legacy. He is credited with reversing earlier restrictions on vineyard cultivation and ordering his soldiers to plant vines across regions such as Gaul, Germania, and even parts of Britain. These efforts helped stimulate local economies and are often seen as the foundation for some of Europe’s most famous wine-producing regions.

This is more than just a coin—it’s the roots of a legacy. A tangible connection to the emperor who helped restore Rome and planted the seeds of Europe’s enduring wine culture.
