Why This Coin Matters

When Philip II became king of Macedon in 359 BC, he inherited a kingdom on the verge of collapse — threatened on every border, economically weak, and militarily outmatched. Within a generation, he had transformed it into the most powerful state in the Greek world. His method was total — military reform, economic development, diplomatic genius, and relentless campaigning combined into a system no Greek city-state could match.

His greatest innovation was the Macedonian phalanx — a professional infantry formation armed with the sarissa, a pike nearly twice the length of a traditional Greek spear. Combined with the devastating strike of his elite Companion Cavalry, it produced a combined arms system that was effectively unbeatable. At the Battle of Chaeronea in 338 BC, he shattered the armies of Athens and Thebes and united most of Greece under Macedonian leadership through the League of Corinth.

Philip was assassinated in 336 BC — just as his planned invasion of Persia was beginning. His son Alexander inherited everything he had built and used it to conquer the known world. This bronze coin was struck during the years Philip was building that foundation — the laureate head of Apollo on the obverse, the cavalry horse on the reverse, the name of the man without whom there would have been no Alexander the Great.
