Few silver coins circulated as widely as the Spanish 8 Reales, often called the Piece of Eight.

Minted in the Spanish imperial world, especially from American silver, these coins became a major medium of international trade across Europe, the Americas, and Asia. They were particularly important in Atlantic and Pacific commerce and influenced later dollar-based monetary systems.

This fragment comes from the Vliegenthart, a ship of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). The VOC was one of the most important joint-stock trading companies of the early modern world and operated a vast commercial network linking Europe to ports and markets across Asia.

In February 1735, the newly built Vliegenthart departed on its maiden voyage carrying cargo, personnel, and silver intended for use in Asian trade. The ship was lost after grounding on sandbanks off the Dutch coast.

The wreck preserved large quantities of silver for centuries before later recovery efforts brought surviving material back to the surface.
