Why This Coin Matters

The story of Licinius I is inseparable from the rise of Constantine the Great.

Licinius became Roman emperor in AD 308, emerging from the political chaos of the Tetrarchy to control much of the eastern Roman world. His relationship with Constantine began as an alliance rather than a rivalry. In AD 313, Licinius married Constantine's half-sister Constantia, strengthening the political bond between the two emperors.

That same year, Constantine and Licinius met at Mediolanum—modern Milan. Their agreement there established a policy of religious toleration throughout the empire, including freedom of worship for Christians and the restoration of confiscated Christian property. The agreement became known to history as the Edict of Milan.

For a time, Constantine ruled in the West while Licinius ruled in the East.

The arrangement did not last.

Competition between the two emperors eventually erupted into open warfare. After an earlier round of fighting, an uneasy peace survived for several years, but by AD 324 the Roman Empire was once again divided by civil war.

Constantine defeated Licinius at the Battle of Adrianople and again at the decisive Battle of Chrysopolis. Licinius surrendered and was initially spared, reportedly through the intervention of Constantia. He was sent to Thessalonica but was executed the following year on Constantine's orders.

His defeat left Constantine the sole ruler of the Roman Empire.

This authentic bronze coin comes directly from that extraordinary period—a time when two emperors who had once been allies, co-rulers, and family became rivals for control of Rome.

Many bronze coins of Licinius feature Jupiter, one of the most important gods of traditional Roman religion, accompanied by the inscription IOVI CONSERVATORI—"To Jupiter the Protector." The imagery makes these coins especially fascinating artifacts from an empire undergoing profound religious change. While Christianity was gaining imperial protection and influence, traditional Roman religious imagery continued to appear prominently on the empire's money.

More than seventeen centuries later, a bronze of Licinius is a tangible connection to the complicated political and religious world that produced Constantine the Great—and to the last man who stood between Constantine and undisputed control of the Roman Empire.
