Ancient bronze prutah of Alexander Jannaeus, struck during the height of Hasmonean independence in Judaea (104–76 BCE). These small bronze coins are widely associated with the type commonly known as the “Widow’s Mite,” the humble currency referenced in the Gospel accounts (Mark 12:41–44; Luke 21:1–4).

The obverse typically features an anchor — a symbol often interpreted as representing stability, maritime strength, or royal authority within the eastern Mediterranean world. The reverse displays an eight-rayed star or wheel surrounded by a Paleo-Hebrew inscription reading “Yehonatan the King,” the Hebrew name used by Alexander Jannaeus. The combination of Hellenistic symbolism and Hebrew script reflects the cultural and political blending characteristic of the Hasmonean kingdom.

Weighing only a few grams, the prutah was everyday marketplace currency in Jerusalem and throughout Judaea. These coins circulated widely during the Second Temple period and represent the smallest denomination commonly used for daily transactions and Temple offerings.

Issued during a period of territorial expansion and relative strength for Judaea, this bronze prutah stands as a tangible artifact from a pivotal era in Jewish history — a modest coin carrying enduring historical and cultural resonance.
