Hammered silver kopek of Ivan IV of Russia, struck during the reign of the first ruler to formally assume the title “Tsar of All Rus.” This small but historically powerful coin comes from a pivotal era when Muscovy transformed into a centralized Russian state.

The obverse typically shows a mounted horseman with spear — traditionally identified as Saint George slaying the dragon, though also symbolically connected to the Tsar as defender of the realm. The reverse features Old Russian script naming “Tsar Ivan,” often accompanied by mint identifiers such as Moscow, Novgorod, or Pskov. These thin, wire-struck silver pieces were produced by cutting segments of silver wire and hammering them flat — a distinctive minting technique of early Russian coinage.

Ivan IV’s reign (1547–1584) dramatically reshaped the political landscape of Eastern Europe. He conquered the Khanates of Kazan and Astrakhan, opening vast territories along the Volga and initiating Russian expansion toward Siberia. At the same time, his rule became infamous for the Oprichnina and severe internal repression, solidifying autocratic power.

This silver kopek represents the monetary foundation of the emerging Tsardom of Russia — a tangible artifact from the dawn of imperial Russian history.
