Authentic 3.13g silver drachm attributed to the Elusates tribe of southwestern Gaul (modern Gers region, France), struck roughly a century before the campaigns of Julius Caesar reshaped the region. This issue belongs to the rich and distinctive tradition of Celtic coinage that developed through sustained contact with the Greek trading world.
The obverse presents a highly stylized human head facing left — a hallmark of Celtic artistic expression. Rather than naturalistic portraiture, the design emphasizes abstraction: exaggerated features, flowing hair forms, and symbolic geometry reflecting spiritual and tribal identity. The reverse features a Pegasus moving left, derived from Greek prototypes circulating from Massalia (modern Marseille). Yet in Celtic hands, the winged horse becomes more linear and dynamic, transformed through local aesthetic interpretation.
Struck to a Greek drachm weight standard, this coin demonstrates the Elusates’ integration into Mediterranean trade networks while preserving indigenous style. Silver content and consistent weight indicate economic sophistication within a still-independent Gaul.
This drachm stands as a cultural bridge — Celtic abstraction meeting Hellenistic influence — capturing the final century of Gallic autonomy before Roman annexation. It is a powerful artifact of cross-cultural exchange achieved through commerce rather than conquest.
