The Elymais (Elam) Bronze Drachm (150 BCE–225 CE) is a captivating relic from a lesser-known yet historically significant kingdom in southwestern Iran. Certified and graded by NGC, this bronze issue originates from Elymais — a semi-autonomous region that occupied the ancient heartland of Elam near Susa. Positioned between Mesopotamia and Persia, Elymais stood at a cultural crossroads where Greek, Iranian, and indigenous traditions intersected.

The obverse typically features a diademed ruler in profile, rendered in the distinctive Elymaean style. The king often wears an elaborate tiara, emphasizing regional identity and sovereignty even while operating under the broader shadow of Parthian authority. The reverse presents a combination of religious symbols, geometric motifs, and enigmatic inscriptions that continue to intrigue modern scholars. These designs reflect local cult traditions and a blending of Hellenistic and Iranian artistic influence.

Historically, Elam is referenced in biblical texts such as Genesis and Jeremiah, highlighting its importance in ancient Near Eastern trade and politics. Susa — one of the region’s principal cities — has even been proposed by some scholars as an alternative candidate location for the famed Hanging Gardens traditionally attributed to Babylon.

Struck to a drachm standard rooted in Greek monetary tradition, this bronze coin circulated along vital trade routes linking Mesopotamia with the Iranian plateau. For collectors, it represents a mysterious and culturally layered artifact from a biblical-era land — a tangible connection to an ancient kingdom bridging civilizations and enduring centuries of imperial transition.
