Why This Coin Matters
In 1098, during the First Crusade, a Norman warlord named Bohemond of Taranto seized the ancient city of Antioch after a brutal siege — and refused to give it up. While the other Crusade leaders pressed on toward Jerusalem, Bohemond kept Antioch for himself, founding a Norman Crusader state at one of the most strategically vital points in the eastern Mediterranean, where the routes of three continents converged.
This silver denier was struck under his descendant Bohemond III between 1149 and 1163, nearly half a century after that founding act. The Principality of Antioch had survived Muslim counterattacks, Byzantine pressure, and the constant violence of the Crusading frontier — and it was still minting its own silver, still declaring its identity in metal. The croix pattée on the obverse was not merely decorative. It was a statement — of faith, of authority, of belonging to a Christian order that had crossed the world to be here.
This coin circulated through a city defined by siege, pilgrimage, and war — passing through the hands of knights, merchants, pilgrims, and soldiers living on the edge of two civilizations in permanent conflict. It is one of the most direct physical connections a collector can hold to the world of the Crusades.
