When Claudius II Gothicus became emperor in AD 268, the Roman Empire was fighting for survival. Foreign invasions, civil wars, economic collapse, and plague threatened to tear the empire apart.

Claudius responded with one of the greatest victories of the Crisis of the Third Century.

At the Battle of Naissus in AD 269, he inflicted a crushing defeat on a massive Gothic invasion, earning the title Gothicus and restoring confidence in the Roman army after decades of setbacks. His success laid the foundation for the later achievements of emperors such as Aurelian, who would reunite the empire only a few years later.

Claudius is also remembered for a very different reason.

According to later Christian tradition, the emperor issued a decree discouraging or prohibiting marriages among young soldiers, believing unmarried men made more effective troops. A Christian priest named Valentine is said to have continued performing marriages in secret despite the order. Arrested and eventually executed on February 14, Valentine was later honored as a Christian martyr, and over the centuries his feast day gradually evolved into the celebration now known as Valentine's Day.

Modern historians approach this tradition with caution.

The earliest surviving accounts were written centuries after Claudius's reign, and many details remain uncertain. While the historical connection cannot be confirmed with certainty, the tradition itself has become one of the most enduring stories associated with any Roman emperor.

Claudius's own reign was tragically brief. In AD 270, after only two years as emperor, he died during the Plague of Cyprian before he could fully consolidate Rome's recovery.
